What is a secure certificate?

A secure certificate is a piece of data that your web server uses to encrypt data it sends to your browser, when secure interactions are required. The certificate contains details of the issuer of the certificate and the rightful owner.

The certificate is issued by a trusted party, with the sole task of issuing certificates, validating that the owners are who they say they are and providing verification services that allow visitors to the certifcate owners site to ensure that they are who they claim to be.

This is of course based on trust. Two companies that are entrusted with this task are Verisign and Thawte.

Are certificates necessary?

If you are engaging in any commercial activity on the internet, a security certificate is essential to encrypt communications between your web server and your customers computer.

Is it 100% safe?

Nothing on the web is 100% secure. The development of software to secure and software to infiltrate is rapid and constant.

However, it is still a very small percentage of people who suffer privacy or financial loss when working on the internet. Most of these losses could have been prevented by taking basic precautions, such as installing a security certificate on web servers.

Certificate Procurement

As with any application, applying for a security certificate requires filling out confusing forms and gathering documents.

WebPusher can advise on all aspects of the procurement process, ensuring that all documentation is prepared and delays are minimised.
